That's a nice quote. But lets not over-exaggerate it.
The truth is, much code reading fonts doesn't care about the file extension.
I'm guessing that most programmers on the list can attest to this.

That's plain wrong. You left out the group that is most exposed to this
issue: font creation and rendering people! Again, the truth is, not much
anyone other than the font create / rendering people needs to deal with this.
It's not a big deal at all. I'll buy an evening's rounds of beer for whoever
finds an app is broken in this way.
