All,
Rich Taylor (Qoppa Software) just sent to me the following error report, which I am submitting as ballot comments on his behalf, and which also appear to affect the latest version of the OpenType Specification on Microsoft's website:
--- BEGIN ---
The ISO's OFF spec – and most places in Microsoft's OpenType spec – say that symbol fonts should have the 1st byte of Panose field (OS/2 table) set to "Decorative" (value = 4).
This is wrong. First byte of Panose field should be set to "Latin Pictorial / Symbol" (value = 5).
Microsoft's latest spec gets it right in one place, but wrong in two others.
ISO 2009 spec gets it wrong everywhere.
Apple's TrueType spec says not to trust OS/2 table values.
The few symbol fonts that I've looked at seem to do it right (i.e. Panose[0] = 5) – that's how I picked up on this.
--- END ---
Regards...
-- Ken
