The current Working Draft has been promoted to the Committee Draft at the last meeting [in the end of April], and I asked the SC29 Secretariat to allow an extended 3-months period for comments when the CD ballot is issued. Therefore, the ballot results and comments will not be available by July, and the WG is prohibited to conduct any discussions related to documents under ballot. Attending the SC29 WG meetings in July may still be a valuable experience for you, but I just wanted to make sure we are on the same page w.r.t. expectations of what can or cannot be discussed there. URL: From skef at skef.org Thu May 16 01:45:05 2024 From: skef at skef.org (Skef Iterum) Date: Wed, 15 May 2024 16:45:05 -0700 Subject: [MPEG-OTSPEC] CFF2 stem hint ordering test font Message-ID: <30f94c76-4d84-4d45-8e9d-3a06d181c43a@skef.org> As part of the CFF2 hint ordering change (proposed by Adobe, eventually rolled into Peter Constable's bulk update), we were asked to make a font with glyphs that use the expanded ordering (stems must be in order in the default instance but can be out of order in other instances). I made a test font that is now available here: https://github.com/adobe-fonts/cff2-hint-ordering-test The details are in the README.md. The glyphs were derived from Source-Serif and this font carries the same license. Adobe tested both its own CoolType rasterizer and the one in FreeType (which was contributed by Adobe and ultimately derived from CoolType-related code). Neither seemed to have any trouble with the ordering, in that a) nothing catastrophic happened and b) the stems were generally well-hinted regardless of the position of the posi axis. This suggests that those implementations are not relying on the ordering. That isn't too surprising, in that 1) implementing a binary search on the list while also dealing with the hintmask settings would be a pain, and 2) one might not want to rely on all fonts getting the sort order right. We'd be curious to know what the results are when testing with other implementations. Skef From pconstable at microsoft.com Thu May 16 03:39:46 2024 From: pconstable at microsoft.com (Peter Constable) Date: Thu, 16 May 2024 01:39:46 +0000 Subject: [MPEG-OTSPEC] OpenType 1.9.1 Beta review Message-ID: After (very unfortunately) being delayed by over a year, the next version of the OpenType Spec, OpenType 1.9.1, has progressed from Alpha to Beta. OpenType 1.9.1 Beta Review - Typography | Microsoft Learn The Beta review period is planned to be fairly short before the new version is finalized and released. This shouldn't be a concern since most of the content has been available as alpha for a long time, and most or all changes have also been submitted to MPEG and incorporated into either Amd 2 of the 4th edition or the WD for the 5th edition. The most significant technical change is a change in the interpretation of COLRv1 sweep gradient data. This was already incorporated into Amd 2, and was originally intended to be the main focus for v1.9.1, until (i) events led to a delay and then (ii) it became a priority to get changes from OT 1.8.4 and OT 1.9 incorporated into the WD for OFF 5th edn. The next most significant change is the complete, editorial re-write of the CFF2 and CFF2 CharString specs (now combined into a single chapter) that is being incorporated into the 5th edn CD. (A draft was already incorporated into earlier WD revisions, and my contribution to MPEG last month included further editorial updates.) For those interested to see in detail what has changed in OT 1.9.1, there are "delta" pages that include change tracking. Note, though, that some chapters have had a lot of editorial revision, so on some pages it may be hard to "see the trees for the forest". See the change log (or the "delta" pages) for more information on changes. The Beta Review landing page also provides links to issue reports that were addressed in this update. Note that OT 1.9.1 does _not_ include the new extensions (wide glyph IDs, VARC...) that have been under discussion for OFF 5th edn. The scope for OT 1.9.1 was intended to be limited to only the COLRv1 update, the CFF2 re-write, editorial sync with OFF, and those fixes for reported issues that could be fit in along the way.
