Dear all,

As a follow-up to my previous message (below), I have uploaded the first working draft text of the new, 3rd edition of the ISO/IEC 14496-22 "Open Font Format". This text is based on the 2nd edition text and includes all changes that were introduced by corrigendum and two amendments since the 2nf edition (ISO/IEC 14496-22:2009) was published. Please note that this is a red-line version of the working draft, with tracking changes "on".

I also made the changes related to Panose field of the OS/2 table (that we recently agreed on) removing the list of Panose property names and leaving only the reference to the Panose spec as the source for field definition. The question to the group: should this change also trigger the change in OS/2 version number? My opinion is that it should not, since neither the actual format of the OS/2 data nor the semantics of the data encoded in the Panose field would be affected by removing the explicit value definitions, especially taking into consideration that the majority of fonts out in the field have already set Panose values according to Panose 1.5. Would you agree? Comments?

I would like to ask you to review the first draft text (which can be downloaded using this link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mpeg-OTspec/files/20120727-w12847_14496-22_WD1_3rd_ed.zip) and approve the changes. Please also note that any future discussions and proposed changes/clarifications should be based on this working draft text. I would also like to encourage you to review the proposals that have already been submitted (which are summarized below) and voice your opinions on those that you believe should be given additional consideration. And, new proposals are always welcome.

Thank you,
Vladimir

Subject: [mpeg-OTspec] New work on 3rd edition of the OFF (AHG kick-off)

Dear AHG members,

With this kick-off message, I would like to announce the start of the new work on the 3rd edition of the ISO/IEC 14496-22 "Open Font Format" that was approved at the MPEG meeting last week. I will create a new working draft merging the base document (previous 2nd edition version from 2009) with all changes that were introduced by amendments and corrigendum and will make the new text available for you to review and comment.

I would also like to ask you to start thinking about new features, functionality and clarifications that you would like to propose to improve the text of the standard. In particular, I would like us to review the proposals that have already been submitted to this AHG in recent couple of years and discuss whether it would be reasonable and useful to incorporate them into the current working draft text. For this purpose, I have collected the references to member posts outlining newly proposed items (my apologies if I missed any, please review and contribute your ideas):

- OTL feature suggestion: Required Contextual Forms <rclt> (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mpeg-OTspec/message/411)

- UTF encoding for 'name' table strings (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mpeg-OTspec/message/655)

- Renaming "preferred" family (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mpeg-OTspec/message/657)

- Panose field in OS/2 (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mpeg-OTspec/message/668) - recently resolved!

- 'name' table update (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mpeg-OTspec/message/714)

- New 'cmap' format (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mpeg-OTspec/message/722)

- Vertical ligatures (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mpeg-OTspec/message/734)

FYI - the next MPEG meeting will take place on October 15-19.

Thank you,
