Adobe has thrown together a few proof-of-concept images showing SVG animation outside the context of emoji. You can view these at <http://www.adobe.com/devnet-apps/type/svgopentype.html>. Caveat: Some Internet Explorer installations don't seem to work with this. The actual SVG files work in IE, so we're trying to debug the HTML wrapper. In the meantime if it's not animating for you, you'll have to view it in a different browser.
