[MPEG-OTSPEC] Request for OFF Github Repo

As I’ve mentioned that I’ve been commissioned to work on updates to the OT spec, I’ve described what I foresee in terms of public review and submission of changes into OFF, via this list. I’d like to add clarification regarding how I am tracking issues for that work, given creation of this repo.

For an OT 1.8.4, I will be tracking issues in https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/typography-issues/issues. That repo tracks issues for content besides the OT spec; I have gone through an labelled all existing issues that pertain to the OT spec, and I will monitor new issues to label them as appropriate. I have also assigned priorities to all of the open OT issues based on criteria I worked out based on impacts and feasibility of completion in a reasonably short time frame.

Some of these issues will require some investigation to determine how the spec has been interpreted in existing implementations. I will focus on implementations by Apple, Adobe, Google and MS, and also Harfbuzz, taking these as representative of industry as a whole. In some cases I may solicit feedback on this list, or I might direct some questions to particular people off-list, as seems would be most effective to get the required input.

I will on occasion check issues in this OFF repo to see if there are any relevant issues or discussion, but will continue to use the typography-issues repo as the one place where I track work items for OT 1.8.4. So if you have a new issue relevant for OT 1.8.4 or for the next version of OFF (which probably means it’s probably relevant for the OT spec as well), it will be helpful to me if you open an issue in the typography-issues repo. Of course, you can open issues in both places.

Cheers!
Peter

Hi Vlad

I'd like to request the creation of an OFF Github repo for the purpose of using the issue tracker to supplement this mailing list - to make discussions more clear in terms of clearly closing an issue when a decision is made, while keeping it open to further comment, tagging issues, grouping them into dated milestones, and so on.

The precedent for this is https://github.com/MPEGGroup/FileFormat<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fprotect-us.mimecast.com%2Fs%2FDVwhClYmL2U2JXMNcGoSpM&data=02%7C01%7C%7C69d4b5e7f7dc45ca5d0908d849e1ec98%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637340581969299571&sdata=AMCJUyjX%2BGojkg60rc3%2BG5DVPVTAw3jugXXAVgGt4t8%3D&reserved=0>

I propose https://github.com/MPEGGroup/OpenFontFormat<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fprotect-us.mimecast.com%2Fs%2FGYOPCmZn6YIjwWMNFOXsw-&data=02%7C01%7C%7C69d4b5e7f7dc45ca5d0908d849e1ec98%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637340581969309566&sdata=YdEnZ4F2t6SgdwiYBwBNclNPfgr43Ay3mHOhmKYWhbE%3D&reserved=0>

To confirm, this is completely separate from the interest in having an editor's draft for the spec text available as markdown on Github for more efficient drafting of proposals.

Cheers
Dave
