[MPEG-OTSPEC] Requesting progress update on COLRv1 in fontTools, FreeType, etc.

There are examples in the draft text for the opening of the COLR table section showing, in a limited way, the difference in capabilities:

https://github.com/googlefonts/colr-gradients-spec/blob/master/OFF_AMD2_WD.md#changes-to-off-5711---color-table

COLR v0:

[Three emoji glyphs that use layered shapes with solid color fills.]

COLR v1:

[Three emoji glyphs that use gradient fills and other effects.]

COLR v1 will provide several additional graphics capabilities: support for gradients, transforms, composition and blending modes, and flexible ways to re-use components. A general way to characterize this would be to say that COLR v1 provides a lot of the functionality available in the SVG table, but without the use of SVG markup or CSS.

But it also goes beyond the SVG table in that everything (for which it would be meaningful) in the formats is variable. So, for instance, in a variable font, things that could be varied include the placement of colour stops in a gradient, alpha values, rotation angles, and more.

That information would indeed be interesting.

Is there already/could there also be, a short, yet reasonably detailed, description of what additional features someone making COLR/CPAL colour fonts will be able to include in the fonts please?

May I request an update for this group, from those implementing COLR v1, regarding the status of the new spec in fontTools and FreeType? Reports on implementation progress in other relevant systems, font editors or design applications would also be welcome. Early opportunities for building and testing COLR v1 fonts are valuable!

thanks,

- Laurence
