Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is NAKAUCHI Tomohiro, and I am working at Morisawa Inc. in Japan as a software engineer.
In past (from 2007 to 2019), my major work was to develop the text layout engine/software.
And, the other day, I attended meeting at CITPC in Japan.
I have read interestedly ISO/IEC 14496-22 "Open Font Format" Amendment 1, so I would like to post comment.
(if there are already any similar questions, then I've overlooked it. if so, I would like to apologize for it, in advance.)
In this proposal, expansion of VORG table is introduced.
On the other hands, when typesetting vertically, to position glyph(s) appropriately, I experienced that use VORG table. That is, I/we use VORG as table for adjusting vertical-position (vertical origin).
For explanation of usage, I show two images (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TJG5-JbuCG39tPr_BEVwtHneJeFj-zsK/view?usp=drive_link and https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HkUAInCrlzqrsrixvKCZKP-wGOpQjjbk/view?usp=drive_link); one does not use VORG (first image file), other does use VORG (second image file).
In my humble opinion, I think that latter (second image file) is laid-out glyphs appropriately rather than former (first image file); in particular, see "1m" and "application" (note that, possibly, this usage of VORG may be only true of the text layout engine/software of Morisawa, because I'm not sure that is whether any other software vendors use VORG for the same as purpose. but, I believe that most of text layout software in Japan use it).
I do not want to oppose to expansion of VORG table. However, in Japan, I/we use VORG table as adjusting position when typesetting vertically. So, at least, I can say that such usage expected font(s) is(are) existed in Japan, and text layout engine/software is also existed. Thus, I hope that this proposal (in particular, expansion of VORG table) does not collide with font(s) and engine/software that are existed in Japan.
Best regards,
NAKAUCHI Tomohiro, Morisawa Inc.
