 Argh, sorry, the current doc has only one paragraph on this and it amounts to "...investigation on-going...". That's fine. Somebody on the zoom call was claiming one or the other "works well / not obviously broken".

Fact is, readability is a language-specific matter.
There is a GSoC project on auto-hinting this summer, and weeks and months of discussions on freetype-devel was just on how to avoid the tilde on some characters getting flattened to a bar at any resolution. If necessary, gives the tilde an extra exaggerated wiggle. This sort of consideration is important to some language, but probably not Arabic where diacritics are largely optional. This kind of work will have to change/adapt for cubic curves.
I don't have a concrete example for hangul/CJK composites off hand, but I would say that, there are typographic elements which helps native readers distinguish closely similar glyphs, which will be lost in heavily re-used composites. A poor analogy might be a "u" and a "v" shape happening in a larger glyph - like "CU", "CV". Native reader definitely want to distinguish a rounded bottom U from a pointed bottom V, for the word mean short for "see you" vs "curriculum vitae/resum'e".Well, that's another example where the diacritics is important: the French origin word resum'e and the English verb resume. Anyway, may be I'll be able to come up with a better / more appropriate hangul/CJK example if I think a bit more.
