Status of the OFF documents

Dear Joern, Young-Kwon,

I believe that at the meeting in Kyoto we established the fact that as a result of AHG exploration activity we discovered that there are now known custom solutions produced by companies such as Microsoft, Apple, Adobe and Monotype (to name a few) that attempt to address the problems that the Composite Font Standard would solve once and for all. This is why the mandate for AHG was to finalize the exploration stage and to develop a timeline for the development of the standard.

I understand that it is unfortunate that forces of nature have affected travel conditions and made it impossible for me to be at the meeting. However, I would like to point out that AHG has fulfilled its mandate and has done an excellent job in preparation for this meeting, as evident from the email list archive and the AHG report m17375 (I have CC:ed the AHG on this email). The draft text of the CFP and accompanying documents have been reviewed and approved by the AHG - my physical presence at the meeting is only required if some concerns had been raised, or if editorial work has to be done to prepare the output documents for publication. I would like to assure you that even though I am not present in Dresden, I am available online or on the phone to answer any questions you may have and to do the editorial work in order to prepare the Call for Proposal and accompanied documents.

If I may, I would like to suggest that the draft documents should be presented by Joern for the review of Requirements subgroup, and that if there are any questions or concerns voiced by the audience, we should postpone the documents until the next meeting. However, if the draft text of the CFP is found to be satisfactory to the group, we should proceed and issue the Call at this time in order not to delay the development of the Composite Font Standard.

Thank you and best regards,
Vladimir

P.S. Dear Young-kwon, regardless of the outcome of this discussion, I would like to ask you to make sure that the new mandate for AHG on Font Format is issued at this meeting to continue the work (and to evaluate the responses to the CFP, if we do decide to issue the Call at this time). Thank you!

Dear Vladimir,

My understanding was that Joern is not comfortable with issuing a CfP at this meeting without your physical presence unless there is strong urgent need.

Sincerely,
Young.

Dear Young-Kwon, Joern,

I would like to inquire if you plan to accept my suggestion to issue the Call for Proposals at this meeting. I understand that while I and other members of the AHG are not present in Dresden, I would like to point out that the AHG has done an excellent job preparing for this meeting - we reviewed and agreed on the draft text of the CFP and all supporting documentation (which is evident from AHG email archive and the documents we exchanged on the reflector).

I don't see these documents being listed as tentative output documents of the System subgroup agenda. I realize that CFP is likely to be processed and approved by the Requirements subgroup and I would like to ask you if this is the plan (I have not seen the agenda of the Requirement subgroup). I would like to emphasize once again that the drafts m17628 and m17629 have been reviewed by the AHG, and that the "Requirements and Use Cases" document remained unchanged since the last meeting (N11212). It would be good to have CFP issued at this time; postponing this until next meeting in Geneva would only introduce an unnecessary delay in the development of the Composite Font standard.

Thank you and best regards,
Vladimir

Dear Young-Kwon,

If possible, I would like to issue the Call for Proposals at this meeting - delaying it until the next meeting would push the development schedule of the standard which is something I would like to avoid if possible. Since this has been part of our last mandate, the AHG reviewed and agreed on the proposed text of the CfP, and the "Draft Requirements and Use cases" have already been approved at the last meeting (N11212) - the AHG agreed on the document with no changes. In order to facilitate response to the CfP, we also agreed to accompany the CfP with public working draft that was developed based on the exploration activities conducted by the AHG since January 2009 - the text of the WD was also reviewed and agreed by the AHG. I have uploaded the draft texts of the CfP and WD as input contributions m17628 and m17629.

I believe that we are all set to issue the CfP based on the results of the AHG work (as outlined in the report m17375) - postponing this until the next meeting would only introduce an unnecessary delay. As far as other documents are concerned (FDAM and COR1) - we can delay those until the next meeting with no harm done.

Thank you and regards,
Vladimir

Dear Vladimir,

Since you are not able to come, I've decided not to progress anything related to Font Format unless there is urgent thing. Joern is also sharing this view. Do you think there is anything require immediate action at this meeting?

Sincerely,
Young.

Dear Leonardo, Young-Kwon,

I would like to inquire about the status of the output documents related to ISO/IEC 14496-22. At this meeting, we have two ballots (one is closed and one will be closing on Wednesday, April 21st). As a result of the ballots, we would be able to prepare and issue the following output documents:
1. ISO/IEC 14496-22:2009/FDAM1 "Support for many-to-one range mappings", and

2. ISO/IEC 14496-22:2009/COR1

According to the mandate for the AHG on Font Format Representation, we also planned (and are ready) to issue a Call for Proposals for Composite Font Standard. It was planned to be accompanied by two supporting documents:
1.      Call for Proposals for Composite Font Standard;

2. Requirements and use cases for Composite Font Standard (based on the draft text N11212), and

3. Working draft of ISO/IEC 14496-22/WD based on the exploration work done by the AHG.

None of these output documents is currently listed in the goals of the Systems subgroup for this week. I am not sure whether the current status of the meeting would allow considering these documents as official output of the meeting (is there a quorum requirement that has to be met?).

I am also not sure if it makes sense for me to even attempt to travel to Dresden if there is a chance. Currently, my existing travel reservation is pending and active, and my travel agency is trying to find any possible alternative way to get me to Dresden this week. However, I am not sure if it's even necessary for me to travel, if the status of the WG11 meeting would prevent us from issuing the output documents. Please advice.

Thank you and best regards,
Vladimir
